A new report from “The Vision Council” found that more than 55% of adults in the United States lose or break their sunglasses every year while 27% of Americans don’t wear sunglasses at all. It’s what we can’t see that matters the most. The sun creates ultraviolet (UV) light rays, which contribute to the heat it produces. These invisible rays, called UVA and UVB could cause irredeemable damage to your retina and corneas. Short-term exposure can leave the eyes bloodshot, swollen, or hyper sensitive to light. Sadly, many people are ignorantly permitting their eyes to face the same outcome by simply choosing not to wear sunglasses. Wouldn’t it be easier to look after your eyes from the start rather than going for laser treatments in the future? Wearing good sunglasses will help reduce future implications.
The use of sunglasses can forestall long-term complications like cataracts, macular degeneration, and even skin cancer near the eyes can be evidence of sun damage. Cataracts are an eye condition that involves clouding of the lens behind the Iris and Pupil. The World Health Organization reports that, worldwide, approximately 900,000 people are blind because of cataracts—cloudiness in the lens of the eye—triggered by UV exposure. Although it is not 100% certain that this is the cause, it has been determined that people who constantly wear sunglasses have seen a reduced incidence of this eye disorder. Muscular degeneration is the inability in seeing details. Commonly, face recognition can also be hard to distinguish. Both diseases are a commonplace in old patients. However, people who practice care in picking sunglasses with 99%-100% UV protection stand at better chance at avoiding this implication.
The Vision Council introduced its UV protection campaign, “Bureau of Missing Sunglasses” to increase public understanding of the harmful effect of unprotected UV exposure and to promote wearing sunglasses, year-round.
Not wearing sunglasses will expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that could end up costing you a lot more than buying a good pair of sunglasses so make sure that you wear them often! Forget the cheap $5 pair of sunglasses for sale at the corner because those can do you more harm than good. Our pupils dilate behind dark lenses, meaning cheap shades will actually let more damaging rays into your eyes than if you weren’t wearing sunglasses at all. Designer brands such as Michael Kors and Vera Wang carry sunglasses that are designed to block 99%-100% of harmful UVA and UVB light. Pick a design that works best for you, the type of lens, color of the lens, think about the activities that you will be involved in and remember to go for comfort. For maximum performance, remember that use should be every bit as important as cosmetic appeal.

Officially opening this weekend and launched by decade-old friends and business partners Steve Fowler and Scott Paletz, Carson House is the culmination of 16 years of experience in doing events marketing for over 30 of the city’s hottest restaurants, nightclubs, lounges, bars and hotels. Recognizing the LA. landscape was ready for a shift in socializing culture, they heeded their own interests and desires, along with that of their colleagues and clientele, and set out to create a new scene. The result is an upscale venue with a home-like feel that features incredible food, delicious drinks and an always-enjoyable evening.
The roots of Carson House run deep, and go all the way back to 1959. Previously host to iconic Italian eatery Andre’s of Beverly Hills, the restaurant was a regular haunt of Paletz’s grandparents; a dining tradition handed down to Paletz’s parents, who took him there for family dinners as a kid. After closing in 1995, marking an impressive 40 years in operation, the venue was reopened as Andre’s La Trattoria di Beverly Hills, but concluded a few years later to make way for the popular Porterhouse Bistro. Porterhouse shuttered a decade later to usher in another Italian restaurant named Delfini Citta, which opened and closed in 2012. And then Paletz got the call about the space being available.
As such, Carson House set out to honor the edict that once defined Andre’s: offering a warm, inviting and comfortable space for friends to enjoy good food, good drink and an all-around good time. With that in mind, Paletz and Fowler brought in wonder kid Johnny Messina as Chef, also a friend of Fowler’s for years before coming on board.
Messina studied under James Beard Award Winning Chef Frank Audino at age 19 and also clocked time with Wolfgang Puck Private Catering. Messina later worked with Chef Alex Garcia to assemble the kitchen team at L.A. Live’s Conga Room and from there, Messina shared his culinary know-how at Brix @ 1601 in Hermosa Beach. It was as the Executive Chef at Kip’s in El Segundo that Messina really showed his expertise, winning over clients and critics alike with his inventive take on Southern cuisine. Together, he worked closely with Carson House General Manager Mike Smuck, Paletz and Fowler to create a menu featuring an eclectic mix of American favorites.
Head Mixologist and Bar Manager Patrick Brady, who has known Fowler for 15 years. Born into the family that launched the successful Bartenders Brand Dry Mix, which revolutionized at-home cocktail culture in the 1960′s, Brady brings with him an impressive pedigree that’s seen him behind the bar at New York’s famed Limelight in the late 90′s, followed by a stint at Jekyll & Hyde, and eventually landing himself as bartender and Head Mixologist at The Crescent Hotel. It was there that Patrick’ star began to rise with Los Angeles Magazine recognizing him for “Best Garden-Grown Cocktail” in 2008, and Entertainment Today singled him out as a hotshot bartender.
Upon opening, Carson House will feature 20 beers on tap, along with a hearty menu of 20 plus bottled brews, curated by Carson House Beer Director Kevin Olson. Some of their current offerings will include Firestone Walker Parabola, The Bruery Sour In The Rye brewed in Placentia, California and Speedway Stout from Ale Smith Brewing Company in San Diego.
Carson House diners can settle into the Dining Room where they will enjoy a great meal, delivered by Carson House’s attentive wait staff, who are ready to meet their every need, but the main focus at Carson House will be the Bar and The Living Room, which is decked out with comfy couches and cozy seats flanked with warm wood accents. Off to the side of the bar is the Pizza Oven where guests can sit at the counter and watch their pizza being made to order, and for big games and special events guests can also sit and mingle in The Den in one of the comfortable booths.
The Carson House team has worked really hard to create a laid-back atmosphere in Beverly Hills with a focus on customer service. But, what really sets Carson House apart from all of the rest is their focus on friends and family. Not only are the team members already a tight-knit group, but also each and every one of their guests will be considered part of the Carson House family the minute they walk in. Carson House is a natural extension of Paletz and Fowler, and as such, service and hospitality is an idealism that’s been woven into every part of the Carson House philosophy and experience.

Children will be transitioning back into school mode with the start of classes, practices and after school activities. Bring on the extracurriculars; bring on the carpools! BubbleBum, the inflatable booster seat designed for on-the-go families, knows the importance of safety and travel. Below are the best safety tips for carpooling families and friends heading back into the school season.
Always buckle up. Parents are responsible for all passengers on board, including their carpooling guests. Be sure your guest riders are buckling up, and wearing their seat belts properly. For more information on seat belt safety, check out the Safe Kids website.
Make a schedule, make a plan. Whatever your carpooling needs, discuss your schedule upfront with all parents involved so their isn’t confusion who goes where, and who picks up who on each day. This can get tricky but if there is clear communication right away, parents will know what their responsibilities are and where each child needs to go. Having a printed schedule for the carpool is always a safe bet.
Equip all children with the proper seat. Before you pick up the first child for the carpool, be sure you and the other parents have prepared a schedule for each child and what he/she needs for a safety seat. If your traveling guest needs a booster seat, do you have a spare or is the family providing one for the trip? These plans should be worked out before the very first ride so everyone is ready to go on time!
Have all the “extras” on hand. Check in with each parent about safety and medical concerns their children have. Share with other parents your children’s needs as well. If you have a child on your carpooling schedule that has allergies, make sure you are carrying the proper medications and know how to use them in case of an emergency. It’s always best to be prepared for the worst case scenario!
Keep toys in the car. For travels that get a little long, having non-distracting toys in the backseat is not a bad idea to keep your kiddos inline and occupied for the drive. Puppets, handheld games, dolls and action figures are all safe bets for the car that won’t make a mess.
Have all parents’ contact information at your fingertips. Compile a list of people, addresses, phone numbers and backup phone numbers for each carpooling family. Keep the list in your vehicle so you can easily add an address to your GPS or dial a phone number. Also, make sure all contacts are in your cell in case you need to get a hold of someone fast.
Model safe behavior for the little ones. Backseat riders are tuning in on mom and dad during the travel, so make sure you are practicing safe behaviors while driving. Avoid texting and taking phone calls while driving and insert addresses in your GPS before you take off. Playing loud, fun music is entertaining for the kids, but don’t overdo it. Teaching children safe driving practices will only begin to prepare them for safe, smart driving when they reach their teenage years.
BubbleBum is the world’s first inflatable, portable booster seat making carpools and family travel easier than ever.
For carpooling families, parents can feel secure knowing their child is getting the proper booster seat he or she needs during all their travels! BubbleBum is the first inflatable and lightweight booster seat so after use children can easily deflate, roll up, and place it in its handy sack for easy transportation. Children may store BubbleBum in a backpack, locker, or trunk until the next car ride. The excellent design makes after school trips to a friend’s house or practice easier than ever!
BubbleBum retails at $39.99, sold online, www.bubblebum.us, and now available on Target.com and BabiesRUs.com. For more information on BubbleBum, visit them online: www.bubblebum.us. Follow them on Twitter, on Pinterest and “like” them on Facebook.
