Protecting our skin from the sun should be top of mind, especially this time of year. A new survey by the Skin Cancer Foundation reveals that most Americans are not aware of potentially life-threatening skin cancer known as cSCC, cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma. Dr. Ariel Ostad and cancer patient Ron Maniloff join David Wylie to discuss skin cancer awareness.

Dr. Ariel Ostad, MD Dermatologist, says cSCC is the second most common type of skin cancer. The people most at risk for this type of cancer are people who are fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes, and have a long history of sun exposure. Most typically it is seen in people over 65 years old who are male and fair skin.

Rob Maniloff has been a skin cancer patient for over 30 years, but he was not familiar with his cSCC diagnosis.

A survey shows that about 3 out of 4 Americans are not familiar with this type of skin cancer. More than half of Americans incorrectly think that Melanoma is the most common type of skin cancer, although cSCC is diagnosed 5 times more often.

The survey also showed that about only 1 out of 4 Americans know that cSCC can be life-threatening when advanced. Fortunately, it can be treated early on with surgery. If not treated early enough, these type of tumors grows faster.
