Women make up 50% of the US population and out of nearly 200 countries, the U.S ranks 79th when it comes to women’s representation in the federal government. Actress June Diane Raphael co-stars and Gracie and Frankie along with Jane Fonda wrote “The Woman’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World.”

” Women are underrepresented up and down the ballot and women make over half of the population. There are 500,000 offices to run for and they should be in them “

Raphael shares how important this matter is because there are decisions being made about women’s bodies, the future of their children, the planet we live on and there is no voice for them. After the 2016 election June came to feel so devastated and angry which then moved her to do something more. She came across the idea of running for office, then slowly realized there was no information readily available, there was no comprehensive guide book on how to do what she wanted or how it might work in her day to day life, so she set out to create that.

” I believe the only thing you need is yourself. I think so often we think you need law degree, you need to have graduated college, you need a lot of money. Does a lot of money help? it absolutely does but ultimately your experience in the world, your life up until now qualifies you a hundred percent to address the problems that you see in your community. “

There are so many challenges women face and there are some very real barriers for women candidates but what we can do about those problems is certainly vote for women. We can donate to their campaigns and most specifically we can offer help. One of the things talked a lot about in her book is women candidates asking for help, they lead very full lives and often have small children and older parents they’re taking care of. One of the biggest things, the biggest takeaways from the book is to start asking for money. For a lot of women, it’s incredibly uncomfortable to ask that question, to ask people to write you a check but the truth is the check is not going to you, but to the solutions, you want to see.
