Ballet studio holds free classes as an after school program for children in Los Angeles

When school gets out, many students across Los Angeles are trading in paper and textbooks for leotards and ballet slippers. Children rush over to The City of Angels Ballet, where they get to receive world-class training from classical dancers. The remarkable catch is that all of the classes are free of charge.

Mario Nugara, City of Angels founder says when he was out looking around he saw the lack of a ballet academy, especially one that focused on children from neighborhoods that were in under served communities.

He decided to take action. Now after 24 years, Mario has taught over 30,000 children at the City of Angels Ballet and helped guide more than a few career paths. From recruiting dancers to holding career days all over the LAUSD school district, Mario has a lot on his plate.

Nugara says when he comes into the studio and sees their little faces, it’s why he does it. He also says their talent and hard work is what makes it all worthwhile.

Many parents say if it wasn’t for the ballet school, they wouldn’t be able to afford classes; and now because of it, these students have a passion.

The students perform at their schools, hospitals and special events across the community. Teachers and parents agree that the City of Angels Ballet has a wonderful effect on everyone in the community.
