#Creators4Comics Auction Underway for Comic Shops and Bookstores Hit by COVID-19

More than 300 Offerings Include Set Visits, Original Art, Zoom Calls with Stars

#Creators4Comics began a week ago as a few people looking for a way to support comic stores and indie bookstores hit hard by COVID-19. It has ballooned into a swelling movement of comics creators, authors, and celebrity participants posting over 300 benefit auctions on Twitter, with more by the hour. All funds will go to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC).

“These stores have supported us for years, now it is our turn to support them. Our fellow creators are meeting this challenge with all their creativity and passion. Seeing their love turned into action is not surprising, but it is emotional for all of us,”

said Sam Humphries, superstar comic book writer of Harley Quinn, and co-host of television show DC Daily.

With permission, #Creators4Comics borrowed the successful Twitter auction format used by #AuthorsForFireys, which raised over $500,000 in less than a week to assist Australian firefighting efforts. The Twitter-based auctions offer everything from signed comics to artwork to unique events like set-visits and zoom experiences and ends Monday, April 20, at noon EST.  The auction effort is being coordinated by Kami Garcia, Brian Michael Bendis, Gwenda Bond, Humphries, and Phil Jimenez.

Among the participants are Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, Patton Oswalt, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Marv Wolfman, Geoff Johns, Joe Hill, Shannon Hale, Brad Meltzer, Mariko Tamaki, Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Marissa Meyer, Tom King, Mitch Gerards, Danielle Paige, Gene Luen Yang, Bryan Edward Hill, Jason Aaron, Jacquelin de Leon, Mark Guggenheim, Gail Simone, Jeff Lemire, Vita Ayala, David Mack, Ryan North, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Cassandra Clare, James Tynion IV, Marieke Najkamp, Margaret Stohl, Greg Rucka, Jock, Mico Suayan, G. Willow Wilson, and hundreds of others.

#1 New York Times bestselling author of the graphic novel Teen Titans: Raven Kami Garcia set the mission of the effort. “We want to save the comic shops and indie bookstores — every single one. We keep the people from losing the businesses and jobs they love. We keep print alive.”

“What we’ve seen is just how deep the commitment to our stores runs within the comics and book communities,” said Gwenda Bond, NYT bestselling author of the Lois Lane series and Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds. “It’s unbelievable to watch your own personal heroes rise to a challenge this way. We will get through this together.”

Winning bidders will donate directly to BINC, to which Jim Lee, DC, James Patterson, Boom Studios, Lion Forge, Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, Hachette, Sourcebooks, Simon and Schuster, Harper Collins, Chronicle Books, and many others have recently contributed. BINC is accepting applications from local comic shops and bookstores for financial assistance now. BINC’s mission is to strengthen the bookselling community through charitable programs that support employees and their families.

How does #Creators4Comics work?

  • Creators/people run their own individual auctions by tweeting items with the hashtag #Creators4Comics.
  • Auctions/tweets will be posted anytime on or after Wednesday, April 15th.
  • Twitter users scroll through the auction items under the hashtag and reply to individual item threads to place their bids until the auction ends on April 20th, at 12 PM EST.
  • The winning bidder donates directly to BINC and provides the donation receipt to the auctioneer to claim their item.
