I wanted to connect with you about a segment opportunity to highlight the AMAZING “Serving Smiles” initiative that leading medical organization, Operation Smile has recently implemented which is led solely by their HIGH STUDENT VOLUNTEERS.  These high school students all across the United States    are leading efforts to donate and deliver thousands of meals a day our front line healthcare workers in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California, Texas, Florida, and Utah amid COVID-19 Pandemic. Not only are students supporting Serving Smiles, but celebrities including Kate Walsh and Bryan Cranston have showed their support! Breaking Bad star, Bryan Cranston says, “The Serving Smiles initiative truly speaks to the heart and core of Operation Smile. Giving back and supporting others in desperate times of need is what they do best. I’m proud of the organization and admire this new initiative where they’re supporting those on the frontlines of this health pandemic by providing thousands of free meals to hospital employees all across the country.”

In New York City, Allegra Williams, a junior at Horace Mann School in the Bronx, is heading-up the initiative, Serving Smiles, in the New York City area. The 17 year old has personally organized meals to be delivered to Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and Mt. Sinai Elmhurst in Queens. The deliveries will take place throughout the week with a special message. “Since student volunteers in my area can’t make the actual deliveries for safety reasons – we’ve recorded video messages that will be shared with hospital employees,” said Williams.  “We all have a part to play and I want to do my part by showing gratitude and support and this is one way of me doing just that,” said Williams.  The initiative launched this month brings much-needed business to restaurants and shows support and appreciation to those on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as empowers students to give back during a time of dire need.

Operation Smile’s Serving Smiles program is being replicated across the country with the organization’s student volunteers spearheading the initiative with over 900 student clubs jumping into action and gaining momentum by the day!

For student volunteers who are delivering the donated meals directly to hospitals, like 16-year-old Ellie Wilson of Virginia, social distancing guidelines are being followed along with wearing personal protective equipment to ensure donations are made with safety as a priority.

“Every small act of kindness helps – especially when others are putting their lives on the line to help protect yours,” said Wilson.
