Big Bear Snow Play Opens Saturday, October 16 – Earliest Opening Ever

Last week Big Bear experienced ideal snowmaking conditions, with chilly nights dipping into the 20’s and lots of dry winds. Big Bear Snow Play responded by making snow five nights straight from Monday, October 11 to Friday, October 15. The snow-tubing recreation area is now ready to get a jump-start to the winter season. Big Bear Snow Play opens to the public today, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This marks the earliest opening ever for Big Bear Snow Play in its 22 years of operation.

Big Bear Snow Play is currently the only place in Southern California with snow. The snow-tubing park will continue to make snow as weather permits.

“It’s just amazing that we’re able to open this early in October,” said Big Bear Snow Play General Manager Kim Voigt. “Big Bear has white stuff on the ground and colorful autumn trees all around. How do you beat it?”

Big Bear Snow Play has ski-resort quality snowmaking systems to assure there is always snow for snow-tubing family fun. To ensure optimum sliding conditions the park grooms its runs nightly, just as ski resorts do. As winter continues, Big Bear Snow Play will eventually blanket its runs with more snow and expects to boast more than 20 feet of snow on up to eight runs. In fact, Big Bear Snow Play has such great snowmaking capability that snow tubing in Big Bear is expected to last through April.

Big Bear Snow Play provides two Magic Carpet uphill lifts, which are comprised of a large moving conveyor belt, similar to an airport terminal people mover that transports riders to the top of snow-packed slopes. The purpose of Magic Carpet rides is to eliminate the stress of climbing the hill, which in turn provides opportunity for more downhill fun. For added comfort, one of the Magic Carpet rides comes equipped with a Plexiglass cover for those snowy, chilly days. When it’s time for a winter warm-up, head to the heated base lodge for a family-priced snack bar.
