kyle-richards-new-show-ftrAs one of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, actress Kyle Richards is no stranger to dealing with drama. But because she is one of the five million Americans who suffer from chronic dry eye, turning on the water works is often easier said than done.

Chronic dry eye is a condition where there is inflammation in the eye that may lead to lowered tear production. Often, as was the case with Richards, people with the condition find themselves becoming dependent on artificial tears.

Nationally-renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Neda Shamie says that’s usually the first sign there’s a real problem. Other symptoms include redness, irritation or burning and even blurry vision.

Dr. Shamie is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. She says if left untreated, chronic dry eye could lead to permanent damage.

“Seeing an eye doctor is very important to make the determination if you may have this condition,” Dr. Shamie told California Life, “and also seeking treatment with prescription eye drops, rather than just covering the problem with artificial tears.”

One of the prescription drugs available is Restasis, which is the only FDA-approved treatment to help increase tear production.
