Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis (2022) hit the theaters June 24, creating a resurgence of Elvis fans and a new star: Austin Butler.

We can’t help falling in love with Austin Butler as Elvis, the king of Rock ‘N Roll, in this glittery biopic that tells the life story of American singer and actor.

Elvis Presley is one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century, so it’s no wonder Baz Luhrmann directed a film with just as much energy and sparkle as the young rockstar himself.

The real Elvis Presley

It’s a cautionary tale about a small-town Southern boy who goes from rags to riches, and sadly- under the influence of manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks)- lets the wrong people take advantage of him.

Not only is Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis being praised by critics, but Elvis’s own family and long-time band members are declaring Butler’s performance as “Oscar-worthy.”

Butler captured Elvis’s mannerisms, voice, charisma, and brought a new humanized version of Elvis to the big screen.

We get to see the many turns and turmoils of Elvis’s career, from making girls scream in the 1950s when he first wiggled his hips on stage, his 1968 Comeback Special, to his divorce, drug usage, and ultimate downfall.

The movie may feel dizzying at times, with its unique camera angles and fast pace, but it really lets the audience understand what life must have been like for a rockstar.

Epic and intimate, Elvis pays tribute to the legend of Elvis Presley, how influential music was to him and how influential he was to music.
