Facebook aims to redirect energy of Black Friday to encourage consumers to #BuyBlack this holiday season

Black-owned businesses have been hit especially hard by the pandemic, closing at twice the rate of other small businesses. That’s one of the reasons Facebook has launched the #BuyBlack Friday holiday campaign —to harness the energy of the biggest physical retail day of the year to support and celebrate Black-owned businesses and their communities.

To help people get involved, Facebook has created the #BuyBlack Friday Gift Guide, featuring products from Black-owned businesses from across the US. The guide has been curated with the help of the U.S. Black Chambers and other leading voices in the Black community, and features gift items from The Tiny Tassel, DIARRABLU, andBrooklyn Tea among many others (more about these businesses here).

Unlike the typical gift guide, this one comes to life each Friday during the #BuyBlack Friday Show, a Live, shoppable event that spotlights Black-owned businesses, celebrates Black culture and inspires viewers to #BuyBlack. Episodes are hosted by comedian Phoebe Robinson and air Live on Fridays at 11am PT/2pm ET from Facebook’s Lift Black Voices Hub or the Facebook App pages through November 27.

Another way to show support includes the #BuyBlackChallenge. People can tag their favorite Black business on Facebook and use the hashtag, #BuyBlackChallenge, to automatically invite others to buy from Black businesses too. People can also post on Facebook and Instagram Stories with the new #BuyBlack Stories Sticker.
