With the Super Bowl in full swing, many do not consider the cardiac risks that they may incur during the big game. Did you know that your risk of a heart attack more than doubles when cheering for your team?

Coast to Coast is joined by Cardiologist and Author, Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, who spreads awareness regarding cardiovascular stress during the Super Bowl and shares some tips on how to reduce your risk of heart disease!

“Your risk of heart disease more than doubles when you are cheering your team on,” states Dr. Steinbaum, “and the reason is there is a release of all these stress hormones…what they do is increase your heart rate, increase your blood pressure, and this is the perfect setup for a heart attack.”

Heart disease is the biggest killer of men and women in the United States, with a multitude of contributing factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress, or family history. Dr. Steinbaum emphasizes the importance of understanding what your risks are to mitigate heart disease.

One helpful website and tool to use when trying to calculate your cardiac risk factors is www.checkyourheartrisks.com, which provides an online assessment that one can take and bring to their healthcare provider as a way of starting the conversation around heart disease!
