New Marvel movie “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” incorporates both humor and action amidst a struggling family dynamic

Similar to other Marvel main characters, Shang-Chi comes from a tragic and painful past thanks to his ruthless war-lord father. He decides to escape from his father’s wrath and move to San Franciso, where he continues his life as a car valet under the name “Shaun.”

After living in a bit of normalcy, Shang-Chi’s father forces they meet again, much against Shang-Chi’s will. His father needs help on a new mission involving mystical creatures and burdens from his late-mother’s past.

The intense struggle between father and son is personal and deadly since many of their unresolved issues get dealt with through violence. However, the performances are stoic as the characters choose not to speak with their feelings, but instead through beautifully choreographed fight scenes.

Canadian actor Simu Liu appears as main character Shang-Chi after tweeting about the role a few years ago when it was announced. Much attributed to Shang-Chi’s best friend Katy, played by Awkwafina, the film incorporates humor into the violence-packed plot.

Other strong female characters staring in the film include Meng’er Zhang as Shang-Chi’s estranged sister, and Michelle Yeoh as his aunt.

The movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, premiered on September 3, 2021, and can be watched in theaters now!
