Sonoma County Tourism celebrates 50th anniversary of Earth Day

Given the continuing shelter in place orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sonoma County Tourism (SCT) took a different approach to celebrate the 50thanniversary of Earth Day.

The organization has created a no-waste and plant-based cookbook, as a central component to how SCT is commemorating the milestone occasion.

The team at Sonoma County Tourism would normally come together in-person to demonstrate support for environment. Although unable to do so this year, SCT’s team still shared their commitment to sustainability by creating the cookbook.

Debuting on Earth Day, April 22, 2020, the cookbook is available on Sonoma County Tourism’s website. There, users will check out the cookbook, in addition to other ways that Sonoma County is celebrating Earth Day, virtually.

The cookbook idea was borne by Jennifer Richards, Vice President of Group Business Development, at SCT. The goal of the project was to highlight individual sustainable practices that Sonoma County residents incorporate in our own homes when preparing meals for our loved ones.

“A collection of zero-waste and plant-based recipes paired with what sustainability means to each of us, I believe represents how individual actions can make a big difference… each responsible act to conserve our natural resources creates a positive impact. My hope is that this cookbook offers other people easy ways to incorporate sustainable practices when choosing a recipe that we’ve shared.”

The cookbook is a collection of recipes from SCT staff members, as well as board and community members. Each person shares one of their favorite recipes – all of which are either no-waste, or plant-based items. Each person offers personal quotes, as well as images of the dish.

In addition, the cookbook includes Earth Day and sustainability facts. Sonoma County has long been a leader in the way of eco-consciousness, and environmental protection. As an organization, Sonoma County Tourism is focused on sustainability and destination stewardship.

Through a short, but insightful pledge to “Travel Kindly,” visitors can confirm their commitment to considering the environment and those around them while traveling about Sonoma County. The pledge can be found at: www.sonomacounty.com/sustainable

In addition, SCT has partnered with Kind Traveler, an innovative online travel booking platform that allows visitors to donate to local non-profit organizations with every booked hotel stay.

As wine is central to any Sonoma County experience, the region became the world’s first certified sustainable wine region in 2019. The Sonoma County Winegrowers’ sustainability program helps to preserve agriculture and multi-generational family farms.

We are hoping everyone stays safe and healthy. When the stay-at-home orders are lifted, we are here to welcome you to Sonoma County, Where Life Opens Up.
