Surprising Health Benefits Of Cheese As Part Of Your New Year’s Diet

The results are pouring in for one food responsible for promoting a longer life, lowering the risk of diabetes, decreasing belly fat, and cavity-proofing teeth. Guessed it? It’s cheese!

For too long cheese has been given a bad rap because of the way nutritionists used to classify foods by only looking at the nutrition labels and not how the food is absorbed in our bodies. Today we know better and here are five fromage facts gathered by cheesemongers and owners of Fromagerie Sophie, a European-inspired cheese shop in San Luis Obispo, California.

  • In 2016, The Journal of the American Heart Association discovered eating more than an ounce of cheese per day resulted in a three percent lower risk of stroke, lowered the risk of cardiovascular diseases and could be a predictor of a longer, healthier life.
  • A study in the journal, Diabetes, says a substance called butyrate, found in Gruyère, blue, Gouda, Parmesan and cheddar can protect against type-2 diabetes by helping the body process insulin more effectively and managing blood-sugar levels.
  • Cheddar was also a favorite of Texas A&M University researchers who say eating aged cheeses can boost life expectancy by 25 percent due to a compound called spermidine, believed to prevent liver fibrosis.
  • If you’re specifically looking to lose belly fat in 2018, Australian researchers at the Curtin University of Technology in Perth claim that a diet full of dairy products reduces blood pressure and can be attributed to greater total abdominal fat loss.
  • And, if that doesn’t make you smile: The Academy of General Dentistry in America says cheese makes the mouth more alkaline, decreasing the need for dental treatment by increasing pH levels. Simply put, eating cheese prevents cavities and improves overall dental health.

So, grab some cheese and kick back knowing you’re improving your health one bite at a time!
